The First Annual Postdoc Research Symposium saw over 120 postdocs and members of the UF community turn out for oral and poster presentations at Emerson Alumni Hall on Monday, April 8.  From over 80 submitted abstracts,  first place and second place winners were chosen for the oral and poster categories.

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is pleased to announce the following postdoc winners of the oral presentation and poster competitions in yesterday's first annual Postdoc Research Symposium:

Oral Presentations:

First Place:  Dr. Michael Layden, Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience
Presentation: Developing the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis as a model to understand neural development and regeneration

Second Place: Dr. Michael Wiggs, Applied Physiology and Kinesiology,  College of Health and Human Performance
Presentation: Impact of mode of mechanical ventilation on diaphragmatic protein synthesis

Posters:

First Place:  Dr. Ashley J. Smuder, Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, College of Health and Human Performance
Presentation: FoxO transcription contributes to mechanical ventilation-induced diaphragm dysfunction

Second Place:  Dr. Daniel Ryder, Physical Therapy, College of Public Health and Health Professions
Presentation: Temporal Changes in the Acetylation Profile of Skeletal Muscle Proteins during Atrophy

Also recognized at the Symposium was the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine in the College of Medicine for their high level of postdoc participation. The department received the 2013 Postdoc Engagement Award for their outstanding support of postdoc development.

The OPA thanks Dr. David Fuller for providing an inspiring keynote address.  The Office also thanks all the presentation judges for their service:  Dr. Celine Baligand, Dr. Martin Cohn, Dr. Kevin Folta, Dr. David Fuller, Dr. Erica Goss, Dr. Chris Hass, Dr. Sobha Jaishankar, Dr. Eoin Quinlivan, and Dr. Mark Wallet.
