There are two postdoc appointment types, Postdoctoral Associate and Postdoctoral Fellow, which are defined in UF Regulation 7.003.

Postdoctoral Associates

Associates may be appointed for up to four (4) years. Beyond four (4) years will require approval of the Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School. Associates are considered temporary employees (OPS) and may be eligible for UF employee benefits.

At the end of the initial appointment, the postdoctoral associate may choose one of the following:

  • A. leave UF or take a regular position;
  • B. apply for an extension of the postdoctoral position in the same laboratory (maximum of 2 additional years with thorough justification); or
  • C. apply to study in a different UF laboratory in order to gain additional skills (maximum of 2 additional years).

It should be made clear to the postdoctoral associate that at the end of a maximum of 6 years, there will be no further extensions of a postdoctoral appointment. Any subsequent UF employment must be through a normal search process for a regular position.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Fellowships are awarded to aid the fellow in the pursuit of study or research, and no services are expected. Fellows are not considered employees and are not eligible for UF employee benefits.

Postdoctoral Associate Extension

In order to extend an appointment beyond 4 years, an extension must be requested.
